Grade Inflation

The Real Issues and Potential Solutions

  • consistency between sections
    Student grades should not be dependent upon whose section they are in. We therefore need to ensure that sections are not out of step in their distribution.
  • can be addressed by
    • posting grade distributions within the faculty
    • close collaboration between horizontal groups
    • including course grade mean on student transcripts: Clearly, anyone reading the transcript can interpret an 'A' in a class where the average is 'A+' appropriately in comparison with an 'A' in a class where the average is 'B"
